Description
Stig Cooper paints from the heart. He works not from images or memory, but from instinct, seeking to capture a mood or feeling. He is acutely aware of the world around him and draws inspiration from sensory experience. Choosing not to represent any specific location, his works depict windswept hills, unsettled seas, turbulent skies and the complex interplay of light and dark. He is particularly drawn to the sky as a source of inspiration- its vastness, light and ephemeral beauty. His moody and evocative works are, as the artist states, “of nowhere in particular but everywhere all at once.”
Stig was born in Sweden, near the Arctic Circle. He is most at ease in cooler climates, now living and working in east Launceston, Tasmania. He is a self-taught painter, employing mainly oil and wax on canvas. The palette knife is his tool of choice. He also works with photography, seeking to capture fleeting moments in his travels at home and abroad. His large, light-filled studio has vast sky views and music is his constant companion. Time slips away as he becomes lost in the creative process.
